Duchess Pitches Her Tents

The flashguns flashed. The celebrities air-kissed. And SARAH FERGUSON, the Duchess of York, a woman accustomed to palatial accommodations, was talking tents. Through her charity, Chances for Children, the duchess has been raising money to manufacture 10,000 tents and send them to Kosovo, where they can be set up for refugees.

She flew to New York yesterday for a thank-you lunch at Elaine's, the Upper East Side gathering place for people who inevitably seem to have boldface names. And so she found herself surrounded by a crowd that included the songwriter DENISE RICH, the socialites NINA GRISCOM and PATRICIA KENNEDY LAWFORD and JASON RAIZE, a star of "The Lion King."

"The question everyone is asking me is, 'Why are you doing this when the war is over?' " she told the crowd. Then she answered the question: "Even if they clear the landmines and make it safe, the refugees will still need tents because there are no homes anymore."
