Miami songwriter/producer Desmond Child and partner Winston Simone said Thursday they are forming a Miami-based, independent record label that will be financed and distributed by industry giant Universal Music Group.

Deston Entertainment, the name of the new label, plans to focus on pop, alternative rock and country and expects to put out its first CD by March: an English-language pop album by newcomer Jason Raize, who is currently starring on Broadway in The Lion King.

Deston will go after established talent and also local acts, Simone said from New York, where the label also will maintain an office.

"The difference between this label and others is we'll always have a small roster, so artists will get an incredible amount of attention,'' Simone said. "When albums are done, they'll be coming out in the biggest label in the world [Universal], so it will be the best of both worlds.''

All Deston Entertainment albums will be recorded at Child's Miami studio, called "The Gentleman's Club.''

Terms of Deston's deal with Universal weren't announced.

Child has writing credits on numerous Top 40 hits, including Kiss' I Was Made for Loving You, Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name and Aerosmith's Dude Looks Like a Lady. A strong supporter of local talent, Child also is one of the founders of "Songwriters in the Round,'' a monthly showcase for local and established songwriters.
