Soccer it to 'em
Guess who attended the grand
opening celebration of the
National Soccer
Hall of Fame and Museum the
other week up in Oneonta.
Right. Our own Staten Island
member of said Hall, Jack Hynes.
And he was there with some
pretty impressive folks too,
from current
stars Tony Meola and Eric
Wynalda of the U.S. National
Team and also of
the MLS and Mary Harvey, a
goalkeeper for the U.S. team
that won the
inaugural Women's World Cup in
1991 and the gold medal at the
1996
Olympic Games, to James
Hamilton, chairman of the U.S.
Soccer
Federation, and his colleague
Hank Steinbrecher, to Hall of
Famers Walt
Bahr (whose two sons, Matt and
Chris, used their soccer skills
to
become star kickers in the NFL),
Duke Nanoski, Len Oliver, George
Brown
(whose dad played in the first
World Cup in 1930), and Gene
Olaff
(who's always there when Jack
is!).
And while the whole ceremony -
complete with speeches,
entertainment by
The Lion King's Jason Raize, an
Oneonta native, chosen
dignitaries
kicking soccer balls through a
museum atrium and even a
sky-diving
team, the best part, of course,
was seeing pictures of himself
hanging
there amidst the other great
ones!
